SPMU Removal in Glasgow

Obsidian Clinics offers professional semi-permanent makeup removal for clients who wish to lighten or completely remove unwanted cosmetic tattoo pigment — whether placed at Obsidian or at another clinic. We use saline solution removal, a non-laser method that works by drawing pigment back to the surface of the skin through osmosis, allowing the body's natural healing process to expel the pigment from the superficial dermis. This approach is gentle, effective, and suitable for the superficially placed pigment typical of SPMU treatments.

Saline removal is a preferred alternative to laser for cosmetic tattooing because laser treatment can cause colour changes in certain pigments — particularly those containing iron oxides common in SPMU pigments — potentially turning brows or eyeliner grey, green, or orange before they can be removed. Saline removal does not carry this risk and is effective across all SPMU pigment colours and tones. Multiple sessions are required for lightening or full removal, spaced at least 6–8 weeks apart to allow full healing between treatments.

Every SPMU removal client at Obsidian undergoes a detailed medical assessment prior to treatment. This allows our Nurse Prescriber to evaluate the pigment type, placement depth, skin condition, and realistic outcome, and to set clear expectations before any removal sessions are committed to. This service is exclusive to our Glasgow clinic.

Benefits of Our SPMU Removal Service

The SPMU Removal Process

01

Medical Assessment & Pigment Analysis

Your Nurse Prescriber assesses the pigment colour, depth, coverage, and skin condition. Realistic outcomes, number of sessions required, and risks are discussed in full.

02

Session Planning

A personalised removal programme is designed, including the number of sessions recommended, spacing between sessions, and aftercare requirements.

03

Saline Removal Application

A specialised saline solution is applied to the SPMU area using a fine needle, working in controlled passes to draw pigment toward the surface. A scab forms as part of the natural healing response, carrying pigment with it as it sheds.

04

Aftercare & Healing Assessment

Detailed aftercare is provided after each session. Healing is assessed before subsequent sessions are scheduled to ensure the skin has fully recovered.

Aftercare Advice

  • Do not interfere with, pick, or scratch the scab that forms after treatment — this is essential
  • Keep the area clean and dry for 7–10 days after each removal session
  • Avoid sun exposure, saunas, and swimming during the healing period
  • Apply the provided aftercare balm gently once scabbing has fully resolved
  • Allow a minimum of 6–8 weeks between sessions for full healing
  • Do not apply makeup or cosmetics to the treated area until fully healed

Suitable Candidates & Contraindications

  • Suitable for removal of SPMU brow, eyeliner, and lip pigment placed in the superficial dermis
  • Medical assessment required before treatment — suitability is confirmed at consultation
  • Not suitable for deeply placed or body tattoo ink — saline removal is for cosmetic SPMU depths only
  • Not advised on sunburned, actively irritated, or broken skin
  • Clients with certain skin conditions should disclose these at assessment
  • This service is available at our Glasgow clinic only; not currently available in Edinburgh

Frequently Asked Questions

The number of sessions required varies significantly depending on the saturation of the original pigment, its placement depth, the colour, and how the skin has healed over time. Lighter or more faded pigment may lighten considerably in 2–3 sessions; denser, more recently applied SPMU may require 4–6 or more sessions. Your practitioner will give an honest assessment of the expected number of sessions at your medical consultation.

For cosmetic tattooing specifically, saline removal is often the safer choice. Many SPMU pigments contain iron oxides that can react unpredictably under laser wavelengths, potentially darkening or changing colour before they can be removed. Saline removal works through osmosis without this risk, and is gentle on the superficial skin layers where SPMU pigment is placed.

Topical numbing cream is applied before each removal session to minimise discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as similar to microblading — mild scratching. Some areas, particularly the eyeliner region, may be more sensitive. Your practitioner will ensure you are comfortable throughout.

Yes. We regularly treat clients with problematic SPMU from other providers. A thorough assessment is carried out to evaluate the pigment and skin before any treatment begins. We will be honest with you about what is achievable and how many sessions may be required.

A minimum of 6–8 weeks between sessions is required to allow the skin to fully heal and for the maximum amount of pigment to be expelled. Attempting removal too soon after a previous session can cause scarring and compromise the result. We will not schedule sessions closer together than this gap.

SPMU removal is currently available exclusively at our Glasgow clinic. If you are based in Edinburgh and require removal, we welcome you to visit our Glasgow location. Please contact us to discuss your options before booking.
