Course Structure — Step by Step

Our SPMU courses follow a structured progression that builds genuine competence at every stage. You will never be moved on until you are confident — our small class sizes mean the pace adapts to you, not a room full of strangers.

  1. Theory & Anatomy

    The course begins with a thorough grounding in skin anatomy, facial mapping, colour theory fundamentals, hygiene and sterilisation standards, and client consultation and contraindications. A confident theoretical foundation is the bedrock of outstanding practical results.

  2. Colour Theory & Machine Mastery

    Students explore pigment science, undertone identification, colour correction, and machine or tool calibration. Understanding how pigments behave in different skin types — and how they evolve as they heal — is one of the most critical skills a successful SPMU artist develops.

  3. Practical on Skins & Models

    Theory transitions into hands-on practice on synthetic skin pads before students progress to working on live models under close tutor supervision. Real model work is an irreplaceable part of genuine SPMU competence — no shortcuts here.

  4. Assessment & Certification

    Students complete a practical assessment demonstrating mastery of the techniques covered. On successful completion, a full accreditation certificate is awarded — accepted by leading insurance providers and valid for professional practice across the UK.

No prior SPMU experience is required for our foundation courses. We welcome complete beginners — our structured curriculum takes you from the fundamentals of skin anatomy and colour theory all the way through to practical model work and certification. If you already hold an SPMU qualification, we can advise on the most appropriate advanced course for your current level.
SPMU courses at Obsidian typically run over one or two full days depending on the technique and level. Some courses involve pre-study material to cover theory before the practical training day. Enquire to confirm the exact duration and format for the specific technique you are interested in.
Yes. All professional kit, pigments, practice skins, and consumable materials are included in the course fee. You will train with the same equipment used in our award-winning clinic, so you know exactly what to invest in when you set up your own practice.
Your SPMU accreditation certificate is awarded permanently on successful completion of the course. There is no expiry date on the core qualification. Insurance providers do recommend periodic CPD refreshers, and we offer refresher and advanced courses to keep your skills current — but the foundational certificate is yours for life.
